Radiate Windrush Festival invitation

Radiate Windrush Festival

This year, the annual Radiate Windrush Festival will be held on the 25th and 26th June in Burgess Park. The festival was founded to celebrate Windrush history and the Caribbean Generations that became Black-British following the migration. It’s a grassroots event for the free expression of Black culture. It hosts an incredibly diverse combination of cultural experiences from an array of Black communities in the UK, including music, food, art, fashion, hair and dance.

One project is inviting students to contribute.

Wendy Cummins the founder of the festival is looking for contributions to a word wall to be displayed at the event. The wall is a collection of words and phrases from the Patois, Creole, Pidgin and English dictionaries.

As a research project for students this means either working from an English word into two other phrases from the Creole, Patwa, or Pidgin, or from a dialect word and working back towards the English. It’s also open to a much more free interpretation for students’ own dialect or language bridging Creole, Caribbean or in a phonetic form.

The brief:

‘The default sizing is A3 displays boards (though this can be proposed as bigger or smaller) with versions of the word or phrase displayed using artistic typography produced as digital prints or possibly physically painted. Which would be mounted & hung on dressed fencing panels running along the inside perimeter as part of the culture & heritage space.

‘The aim is to show how beautiful & connected language is.

‘It’s both a communications project and also an artistic presentation project combined. It would be a small joint project between UAL & Radiate Festival as part of our cultural community partnership work.

‘Delivery Deadline: 13 June 2022’

A great weekend project. Enjoy!
